Tropical oceans play a key role in climatic variations. Ocean-atmosphere interactions induce large-scale and low-frequency variations which, due to the specificity of tropical ocean dynamics, are very difficult to observe with traditional in situ measurements. During the past twenty years, a variety of numerical models of diverse complexity have contributed much to the description, understanding and prediction of ocean variability in the tropics. However, the capacity of these models to simulate adequately the ocean variability heavily depends on the accuracy of the atmospheric forcings and that of initial conditions. Satellite altimetry provides a unique opportunity to avoid the problem of scarce and non-synoptic in situ data coverage for the large-scale... |

The material properties of over 50 different laminates made by a group of Finnish boat-yards have been measured in a large test project. Tension, compression, bending, interlaminar shear and impact tests have been carried out for all the laminates. Among others, different polyester resins, different woven and non-woven fabrics, chopped strand mat and unidirectional roving were used as basic ply materials. The effect of various parameters has been determined not only on the maximum failure strength, but also on the strain level at which the first failure occurs. Main differences between the ratio of static and impact test results of the different materials have been determined. The results show that by choosing certain material parameters efficiently,... |

A conceptual model of grocery coupon usage is developed and maximum likelihood estimates of a Tobit model are used to assess the influence of several economic and demographic variables on consumers' use of grocery coupons. Specific factors considered include income, age, household size, race, education, shopping practices, and size and composition of grocery transactions. The analysis includes a combination of scanner and survey data collected from 1,047 consumers. Results confirm strong effects for household size, race, shopping practices, and size and composition of grocery transactions. |

In this paper a method for estimating a producer's willingness-to-pay for crop insurance is presented. The method includes formulae to capture the impact of crop insurance on the producer's expected income and variance of income. These impacts are evaluated in the context of a model of producer welfare which features both price and yield uncertainty, as well as risk aversion on the part of the producer. The method is applied to the Australian wheat industry and estimates of willingness-to-pay are shown to be relatively sensitive to the levels of coverage and yield variability. |

An index to all names of Odonata mentioned in publications of Maurits Anne Lieftinck (19041985) is provided. Lieftinck mainly published on the Odonata faunas of the Indo-Australian and Palaearctic regions. He revised many genera, described over 600 species and also examined hundreds of primary types of previously described species. He included with his descriptions and revisions accurate line illustrations and carefully composed lists of synonymies and references. The index to his works is therefore a key to nearly the full literature of Indo-Australian Odonata, as well as to valuable museum collections of, especially Indo-Australian, Odonata. |

The Chesapeake Bay is a major water resource whose quality has been threatened by soil erosion and agrichemical contamination. The control of agricultural pollution of the Bay is one of the focal points of the 1987 Chesapeake Bay agreement formed by four states in the Bay's watershed (Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and the District of Columbia). Among the suggested solutions is the promotion of low-input agricultural practices. However, some low-input practices also include frequent cultivations of the soil for non-chemical weed control practices, which may induce erosion. This analysis uses a case study approach to determine agricultural practice selection and potential erosion under different soil erosion constraints. A multi-period mathematical... |

An economic analysis was conducted of the Maissade Integrated Watershed Management Project in Haiti. This project, implemented by the Save the Children Federation, differs from conventional watershed management projects by investing heavily in the development of peasant organizations in order to gain voluntary and sustained adoption of soil conservation, forestry and community development innovations. Conventional projects have relied on monetary and commodity incentives in order to encourage technique adoption, and are widely viewed to have failed to achieve sustained watershed management. The goal of the economic analysis was to determine if a project representative of the new, participatory approach was economically efficient from donor and peasant... |
